Obama-care Summary

Let me get this straight......

We're trying to pass a health care plan written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it;

passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but exempts themselves from it;

to be signed by a president that also is exempt from it and hasn't read it and who smokes;

with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes;

all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese;

financed by a country that's broke!

What the hell could possibly go wrong?

Great recitation of Karl Rove's weekend talking point report, but too bad there is little truth to it. But why should that stop you, the right has been trafficking in misinformation for the better part of the last 30 years.

I guess this passes for humor in right wing circles. I'll take Chris Rock.

I did not intend for it to be humorous, nor can you point to a single line that is untrue. If I am mistaken, please tell me which line in there is false, Dave.

Ok, let's start with this one: "but [Congress]exempts themselves from it"

That is false. In the new law it specifically states that the Congressional health care program cannot buy insurance from companies that do not participate in the same pools that everyone else buys from.

#2 President Obama has read the bill, and he also read all of the asinine Republican pro-status quo "proposals" as well. I doubt you could prove otherwise. And last I checked, smoking was legal, so who cares about that.

Which committee chairman (House or Senate) said he didn't understand the bill? There are dozens of committees in both houses that had a hand in crafting the bill. So, who was it? and how long ago was that said? Sounds like another Hannity-invented lie.

Geithner did have a tax issue before he was confirmed, that is true. But the taxes were paid, so saying he "didn't pay his taxes" is not true.

The surgeon general may be obese by some standards, but again, how is that relevant? It's just more schoolyard taunting from the right that has zero substance.

If the country is broke, you might look into the two wars started by GW Bush and put on the credit card. How many trillions did the idiotic invasion and occupation of Iraq cost? Where is the $9 billion in cash that Paul Bremer "lost" the day he arrived in Iraq? Or what about Bush's giveaway to the pharmaceutical companies by making it illegal to negotiate prices in his Medicare Part D scheme?

Here is the exact language from HR 3590 which is now law:

(i) REQUIREMENT.-Notwithstanding any other provision of law, after the effective date of this subtitle, the only health plans that the Federal Government may make available to Members of Congress and congressional staff with respect to their service as a Member of Congress or congressional staff shall be health plans that are-

(I) created under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act); or

(II) offered through an Exchange established under this Act (or an amendment made by this Act).

(ii) DEFINITIONS.-In this section:

(I) MEMBER OF CONGRESS.-The term ''Member of Congress'' means any member of the House of Representatives or the Senate.

(II) CONGRESSIONAL STAFF.-The term ''congressional staff'' means all full-time and parttime employees employed by the official office of a Member of Congress, whether in Washington, DC or outside of Washington, DC."

Will you now admit that it is a lie to say Congress is exempt from the new health care law? And when you see other wingnuts who say that nonsense, will you correct them? It's a nice talking point on Fox and talk radio, but it is 100% false.
