"As I wrote in my previous column, the true intentions of the mosque builders were revealed when they turned down NY Governor David Patterson's offer of state land in return for re-locating the mosque away from Ground Zero. They refused. That this "factoid" was seemingly irrelevant to the president speaks volumes.
It is worth remembering this is the same president who belittled ordinary Americans for "clinging" to religion. I guess Muslims "clinging" to a location that infuriates the overwhelming majority of Americans is perfectly fine, even after it's been revealed for the rankly provocative plan it truly is."

I thought conservatives cared about property rights, and liked local control of government. The building that the center is being built in is privately owned. The owners went through all of the legal hurdles, got all of the necessary permits, and got unanimous approval from the Lower Manhattan board.
Now, conservatives, who don't even live in New York, are telling them to abandon their private property and take public land? So, conservatives want public money used to promote Islam?
Does no one see the irony here?
And which is more sacred? The Bill of Rights or the hole where the Twin Towers used to be?
Dave, you make an excellent point, sir, and indeed I do agree that the actual offer of state land to the mosque was inappropriate and should not have been done. That, however, was not the point.
The point was that this supposed "bridge building" and "tolerance fostering" mosque has no desire to be anywhere else, and the sensibilities of most people there be damned.
Again, I think that they have every LEGAL right to build there, but that doesn't give them the moral right and certainly doesn't "build bridges" or improve relations between practitioners of Islam in this mosque and the rest of the country.
Most Americans see the building of the Cordoba House mosque in this location to be an intentional slap in the face, and judging by the fact that they refuse to move from there even when egregiously offered public supported land for their mosque, that seemingly is indeed their intent.
As I said on my blog, tolerance is a two way street. You are clearly saying all Muslims are guilty of 9/11 and therefore have to repent or redeem themselves in some way in order for their rights as citizens to be honored.
How exactly is building a community center a "slap in the face"? So, no matter what any Muslim does, it is always about 9/11? Should they just start wearing yellow crescents on their clothes so they can identified easier? How about interning them if they are all guilty? Or making certain neighborhoods "Islam free."
The arguments you are making lead down a slippery slope, my friend. I'm sure the Nazis viewed Jewish businesses as a slap in the face. They had kristallnacht.
Dave,the bottom line is that, right or wrong, their building of the mosque at this location will result in consequences contrary to their stated goals of "building bridges" and fostering better relations and understand between Muslim's and non-Muslims.
