Rush on College Indoctrination and the Lack of Critical Thinking

Rush Limbaugh, in this excerpt, asserts something that I have long held as truth.  Colleges today, especially in the more subjective, non-hard science matters and liberal arts fields do not encourage critical thinking, but rather insist upon students accepting the views and theories posited by their professors.  Dissent or opposing viewpoints, particularly in political science fields, are often not only discouraged but are actively ridiculed as being foolish, un-enlightened, or fundamentally wrong.

Indeed I have had the "pleasure" over many years of meeting more than a few graduate students that were educated far beyond their intelligence levels.  The typical condescension and inability for many of these folks to even consider opposing viewpoints based on sound theories and facts speaks exactly to their lack of critical thinking abilities and serves precisely as proof of Rush's assertion that in many cases a college education today represents an indoctrination of leftist pogroms rather than an ability to analyze and actually think with consideration of all aspects of the data presented.

Once again, Rush is right...

I heard Newt Gingrich once comment in an interview some years ago that American universities have become nothing more than the world's most expensive dating service, and that every student should demand their money back.

T, have a blessed Christmas for yourself and your family, and a wonderfully productive and profitable new year!

Perhaps you're referring to Liberty University and Claremont College.

Paine, if I want well-informed and considered information on being a good and faithful husband, Newt Gingrich is among the last people I'd listen to.

If I needed expert advice on ethical behavior in high public office, I wouldn't be caught dead chatting up Randy "Duke" Cunningham or Tom DeLay.

Why would you swallow whole, much less serve up to others, a critique of college education by a drug-addicted college dropout? Specifically, one who's made his vast fortune not by researching, doing the legwork of reporting and taking the time to seriously consider important matters like this, but rather by sitting on his fat butt behind a microphone, shooting off his irresponsible mouth — all for the politically biased satisfaction of a few hundred-thousand "dittoheads" whose critical, independent thinking skills begin and end with whatever Limbaugh tells them.

And, BTW, have you listened to the occasional frightened, remorseful right-wing politician groveling and apologizing to Limbaugh on the air, for having said a less-than-agreeable word about him and his diatribes? So much for tolerance of dissenting opinions.

Sorry, my friend, but some fonts of wisdom turn out to just be sewer pipes.

Be that as it may, I wish you and yours a very merry Christmas and a great new year.

Anderson, oh I see now. So if someone has a degree from Hillsdale College in something like American History, then they are still idiots in comparison to someone with an equivalent degree from an ivy league school, right?

Or perhaps the person that has an insatiable appetite for knowledge and is self-taught through reading and research is evidently not to be listened to when compared with someone that matriculated from some liberal ivory tower school.

Give me a break!

You are helping to make my point, sir.

In my field I deal with a lot of engineers by title. Some of the best ones that I have encountered over the years are those that learned by rising through the ranks of technician and field work, while some of the worst ones I have encountered are degreed engineers. They latter may have an understanding of theory but they are unable to design and optimize a working system in a practical environment.

Again, I think a college education is a very good thing in general, but that is no substitute for the ability of critical thinking and an ability to figure things out and git r' done.

Limbaugh, ironically, is a good case in point. He is indeed a college drop-out, but his knowledge of current events is encyclopedic and accurate. You dismiss him because not only does he not have a college degree, but he espouses a world view diametrically opposed to your own.

I appreciate Rush, along with most of his 20 MILLION members of his weekly audience, not because he tells me what to think, but rather because he articulately states positions on issues that confirm what I already know to be fact.

Lastly, he does indeed have a research staff and regularly is audited by and independent company where he is shown to have a consistent 98% or better accuracy rate in matters of fact.

Olbermann, Maddow, Mathews, and Obama come nowhere close to that level of accuracy.

Regardless, I appreciate the well-wishes and hope that you and yours likewise have a very blessed and merry Christmas, Mr. Anderson! :)

Please don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say that and am not making blanket judgments. Your post is about slanted college education, not IQ levels. FWIW, one can find opinionated, overbearing profs and instructors in every kind of college there is.

Finally, MSNBC's hosts have an excellent record for being factual and for quickly and forthrightly correcting mistakes when they make them. Limbaugh has been caught making some incredible misstatements of fact over the years, yet almost never corrects them.

Anderson, please cite some of these instances of Limbaugh uncorrected inaccurate statements.

(I would advise that you don't use media matters as your source as they are often guilty of the charge you level against Rush.)
